EPISODE 6 – MAYWEATHER VS MCGREGOR

GABE, PRISCILLA, AND HOWARD DISCUSS TRAINING STYLES, NUTRITION, AND MINDSET FOR THE UPCOMING MAYWEATHER VS MCGREGOR FIGHT.
What could possibly be the biggest fight in the history of MMA and boxing, Mayweather VS McGregor, is on the table in this detailed look at the training and fitness aspect of these athletes. In this episode, we look at Connor McGregor and his history, his training styles for MMA, rumors about his training style for the Mayweather VS McGregor fight on August 26th, and also his mindset. We’ll do the exact same thing for Floyd Mayweather as well.
HISTORY OF CONNOR MCGREGOR
McGregor was born in Ireland and his family moved to a new city when he was in high school. He was a self admitted exile and had a difficult time adjusting. He credits this exile to being one of the things that made him strong and who he is today. McGregor has been boxing since he was a kid, as well, and it wasn’t until he was older that he took up MMA. Ultimately, leaving his trade job as a plumber with his father and pursuing his fighting career.
MINDSET OF CONNOR MCGREGOR
According to an article published on the Bleacher Report in 2015, Connor McGregor was introduced to the book, The Secret, by his sister in 2006. Opting to watch the movie instead of reading the book, McGregor originally stated, “Even when I first watched it, I was like, this is b——t,” he says. “But then something clicked for me.” When it clicked, everyone from Connor himself, to his family believes this was the turning point for his entire life. Thinking positive consistently and using the law of attraction, McGregor watched as small things turned into bigger things and manifested into his current sensational life.
TRAINING STYLES OF MAYWEATHER VS MCGREGOR
Interestingly enough, McGregor stated in a Muscle and Fitness interview that he isn’t regimented when it comes to the gym. This isn’t to say that he doesn’t train like an animal every day, but rather that he is constantly using variety in his every day workouts. Some days he will do jiu jitsu while others he will do tae kwon do or another martial art. For weight training, McGregor will tend to use a lot of free weights to help build strength and balance – both of which are critical to him for his fighting.
Mayweather’s typical training session, according to an article in Muscle Prodigy includes the following:
Shadow boxing: Warms up the muscles before hitting the bag. Shadow boxing in front of a mirror can help perfect technique and practice both offensive and defensive exercises.
Spars between 7 and 12 rounds (depending on how Mayweather is feelings): Best replicates a boxing match, working on all facets of boxing skill and technique.
Works the heavy bag for 20 or 30 minutes: Maximizes powerful punches and strikes.
Floor work: Builds up strength, specifically in the core. A strong core is essential in becoming a top boxer and athlete.
Pad work: Increases speed, coordination and timing.
Bodysuit work: Body shots can throw the opponent off balance and knock the wind out of them.
Speed bag: Jab speed is one of the most effective ways to throw off the rhythm of an opponent.
Neck work with weights: A strong neck is key for durability and injury prevention from repeated strikes to the head.
200 sit-ups, pull-ups, dips, jump rope, double-end bag: A circuit routine like this helps boost muscular endurance and strength throughout the entire body.
5-8 mile run: A long-distance run works on those slow-twitch muscle fibers that are needed for proper endurance in the ring to go the distance.
In contrast with McGregor, Mayweather doesn’t use free weights for weight training. In fact, he prefers to build his upper body strength in different ways. Mayweather told Mens Health he will use a medicine ball or other body weight exercises to work on his upper body strength.
NUTRITION FOR MAYWEATHER VS MCGREGOR
The two fighters appear to have very different diets and nutrition. McGregor has stated that he pretty much sticks to the same nutrition year round and doesn’t change it as he approaches a fight. Specifically he stays away from “takeout foods” and “S–t foods”. He said he eats clean meat, vegetables, and fruits.
Mayweather, appears to have a similar diet but has Chef Q prepare all of his meals at $1,000 a meal. His favorite dishes include spaghetti or tacos. When he was preparing for the Pacquiao fight, Mayweather was focusing on high levels of protein with no carbs. His protein came from chicken, turkey, or fish, and he stayed away from pork. He also was juicing vegetables during that period as well.
