Motivation – Responding VS Reacting

Motivation - responding vs reacting

In this motivational video, Gabe’s giving you one of the secrets that changed his life forever.

Gabe is diving deep in this motivational video. He’s discussing the actual, physiological symptoms that occur when we encounter stressors. These can be business related, financial, home, or anywhere. When you start recognizing these symptoms and can learn to control them, you will begin to gain full control of every situation.

Responding VS Reacting

As humans, we grow up watching our parents, friends, and most people that we surround ourselves with, react emotionally to every stressful situation. Typically, when a disagreement occurs, or a stress factor presents itself, we have learned to “react.” The physiological symptoms that accompany a reaction include an elevated heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, and an increase in body temperature. The brain releases cortisol and the frontal cortex begins to shut down as we enter our fight of flight response system.

We’ve all been there and we’ve all experienced what happens when the frontal cortex of the brain is blocked by emotional factors. We have difficulty problem solving situations, our creativity is blocked, and we tend to “circle the drain” as we perceive one bad thing happening after another in the ever so common snowball effect.

Recognition is key

Recognizing the physiological symptoms of reacting to the situation is the first step towards changing the outcome. Once you begin to recognize those symptoms, the next step is to learn to control them. You can consciously begin to calm your emotions, lower your heart rate and your blood pressure. As long as you don’t panic, you will be able to keep the frontal cortex of your brain wide open and continue problem solving.

Change your pattern

Changing your recurring pattern is the next step. Once you’ve learned to control the physiological response that your body has to stressful situations, you then need to identify the pattern you tend to follow. I recommend keeping a journal on your phone, iPad, laptop, etc. so you can look back at situations and search for your response patterns.

The key to change, is to disrupt the pattern. This will be different for every situation and the first attempt may not be the one that finds the solution. However, failing is part of the learning process. It doesn’t mean that we should give up. In fact, we need to do the opposite. We need to push forward and try again but this time, trying something different and altering the pattern once more. Do this as many times as it takes until you find the solution that works for you.

Mastery of this technique will take some time. Expect results immediately but also expect to find yourself making several attempts at each situation until you’ve found what works for YOU.
