Where are your current patterns taking you?
If you’re one of those people with goals and aspirations, then it’s important to look at your daily patterns and ask yourself the question, “Are these things I’m doing daily getting me closer to my goals, or farther away?”
Most people will THINK they are getting closer until they actually look at how long they’ve been holding on to their dreams without them becoming a reality.
The comfortable lifestyle we’ve created for ourselves allows us to stop progressing in life. Human nature is typically such that if our basic needs are met, then our drive to expend effort above and beyond what we already are doing, will be very little. Why? It’s because our rent is paid, car payment is covered, food is on the table, and our TV, cell phone, and internet bills are paid. Those are the basic necessities nowadays and if they’re met, we become comfortable.
Break the old patterns
You can break your current patterns by taking time to recognize the things you do daily that aren’t good uses of your time. Journal the following:
- How much time do you spend watching TV daily? Don’t guess, journal it.
- How much time do you spend on social media daily? Don’t guess, turn on screen time monitoring on your iPhone and look at the daily report. Set limits for social media. Mine is set to 15 minutes a day.
- How much time do you spend on other items for entertainment such as sitting at Starbucks, eating out, etc.
Once you’ve identified where you can pick up free time, then it’s time to tackle your goals.
Self limiting beliefs and self sabotage
We all unconsciously self-sabotage ourselves because our nature is to take care of just the bare necessities that I mentioned earlier. Anything beyond that takes extra effort and our minds will come up with all sorts of excuses to NOT do the things that will allow us to progress.
I hear excuses all the time from people for not “eating the frog” as we call it. Basically that’s doing the thing you don’t want to do – BUT it’s the one thing that will make you progress.
If you stop pointing fingers and passing blame and start taking control of every action of your life, you’ll find that you are in full control of every outcome.
